Since Ostriches are Omnivorous they eat insects,lizards ,greens,roots

The Maasai Ostrich Farm, established in 1992 with only 50 ostriches is East Africa's largest commercial hub for ostrich farming. Situated approximately 37 kilometers from Nairobi, near the Kitengela-Namanga highway,

 the farm spans nearly 200 acres and is home to around 800 ostriches, including both the blue-neck (Somali Ostrich ) and red -neck (Maasai Ostrich ) species. Maasai Ostrich farm has baby ostriches which are 30 day old in some other section there are baby ostriches which are 45 day old, 90 day old baby ostriches, medium ages Ostriches to Ostriches more than 10 years old .Female ostriches have grey feathers while male ostriches have black feathers .


One Ostrich egg is equivalent to 30 chicken eggs

After the female Ostrich lay eggs after every two days the eggs are taken to the hatchery for incubation

Before proceeding to where Ostriches are kept one has to disinfect the shoe soles on a pool of water .While at the farm there is the tour route where visitors are taken around and the first step is the disinfection area which is a biosecurity procedure . Ostriches at Maasai Ostrich Farm are semi tamed ,are friendly to people especially the growers and cannot attack people however for breeders they can attack people but the farm takes caution on that by separating them with the path where visitors may be passing .Though during breeding season the Ostriches do attack people

Maasai Ostrich Farm is the largest in Kenya as well as the only in East Africa


According to the farm manager at Maasai Ostrich farms they feed the Grown ostriches feed 3 kilogram per day that takes care of nutrition of the ostrich with consideration of Carbohydrates, Vitamins and Proteins .Maize as it is rich in Carbohydrates is a major component of the feeds Fish mill, Sunflower and Soya cake are feed to the ostriches as they are rich in Proteins .To boost the ostriches with energy they are feed wheat bran, wheat pollard and maize germ .

Ostriches can grow up to 274.32 cm tall with the neck accounting for half of that height


Maasai Ostrich Farm has an area where they keep the breeders ,the population of female is to male is 2:1 where they a total of 101 female ostriches for production and 49 male ostriches.

Ostriches have the largest eyes of all birds in the world

During August and December sunny period is when Ostriches at the Farm are more active and that is the period when they collect most eggs


At the Farm Paddle Males are placed one per each paddle with two females so as to avoid fighting for territory incase thus only one is allocated per paddle.

The main product at Maasai Ostrich Farm is ostrich meat, which constitute to about 95% of the farm's revenue. Other products and services are tours around the farm, ostrich egg shells, feathers and ostrich oil.

The Male Ostrich still retain their hissing sound that portrays aggression if approached by intruders such as people or animals

To reach the Maasai Ostrich Farm from Nairobi, Drive along Mombasa Road and take a right turn at the Athi River junction underpass onto the Namanga Road. After approximately 15 kilometers, turn right at the Maasai Ostrich Farm signage. The farm is about 4 kilometers from this turn-off.

The Maasai ostrich (Struthio camelus massaicus), also known as the East African ostrich is a red-necked subspecies variety of the common ostrich and is endemic to East Africa. It is one of the largest birds in the world,

Maasai Ostrich Farm Products Price List

The Ostrich Production starts with the breeding population where the eggs are laid and taken to the hatchery. An Ostrich egg takes 42 eggs to hatch double the time taken by a chicken .The chicks are taken to the hatchery then brooder. The farm has a bunch of Ostriches from one month,2 months up to one year where they are promoted to breeder population .Between that period the farm can sell the ostriches alive and if they get to a certain weight they are sold as slaughtered for meat

The facility is an ostrich rearing farm, with the main product being ostrich meat, constituting about 95%of revenue.


Meat is the main product as that is the main reason the farm does rear the ostriches .The Ostriches are slaughtered starting the age of 9 month to one and a half years as at that age the meat is more tender .Ostrich meat is red meat .One of the main benefit of Ostrich meat is the low fat content and low cholesterol. The Ostriches are slaughtered with a weight between 70 kilogram to 100 kilograms or more depending on the age

The Ostrich Egg is big and is about 2 to 3 kilogram while some can range 1.5 kilogram .The taste of ostrich eggs is same as that of chicken egg .The Ostrich egg cannot be boiled because the shell is very hard as it would require a whole day boiling it therefore the only way of preparing it is through frying and making an omlete by breaking it then pour the egg in a jug or cooking pot
