John Deere, a Vermont-born blacksmith, moved to Grand Detour, Illinois, in 1836. Farmers in the Midwest struggled with the dense, sticky soil that clung to their cast-iron plows, making cultivation inefficient. Recognizing this problem, Deere crafted a self-scouring steel plow in 1837 that allowed soil to slide off easily, revolutionizing farming in the region.
