The breed was developed by crossing Southdowns a small, fine-boned breed known for superior meat quality with local horned breeds such as the Wiltshire Horn and Berkshire Knot. The goal was to create a sheep with the fine quality carcass of the Southdown, but with a larger frame, better growth rate, and increased hardiness.

The result was a breed that retained the Southdown’s quality meat but had improved size and vigor. Hampshire sheep were first imported to the United States around 1840, and by the early 20th century, the breed had gained a strong foothold in American sheep farming.
